UP Warriorz Team Squads for Tata WPL 2024

The 2024 edition of the Tata Women’s Premier League (WPL) is in full swing, featuring five teams competing to bring the prize home. While all teams look ready and determined to deliver, the UP Warriorz team stand out with an exceptionally high level of anticipation.

Having secured the third position on the table last year, the UP Women’s team was on the brink of clinching the title. But Mumbai Indians halted their journey in the eliminator round by successfully defending a target of 183 runs.

In a bid to avoid setbacks in this year’s WPL, the UP team has made some significant changes to their squad. They’ve released four players and onboarded four new names to fill the gaps in the team.

Read on for complete details of players who made it to the UP Warriorz women’s team for WPL 2024.

Overview of WPL UP Warriorz Women’s Team for 2024

The UP Warriorz team is owned by Capri Global. For the new season, the management has retained Jon Lewis as head coach and Alyssa Healy as captain.

In their quest to assemble a squad that could win the trophy, the UP women’s team showed confidence in their core squad by retaining 13 existing players, including vice-captain Deepti Sharma, star batter Tahlia McGrath, and Sophie Ecclestone.

They also released Devika Vaidya, Shabnim Ismail, Shivali Shinde, and Simran Shaikh to create spots for talent that can fit better in their squad. The WPL UP team went to the auction with Rs 4 crores in their purse. With this amount, they added four new players to the team.

Here’s the list of these new players and their prices:

1. Vrinda Dinesh (Batter) for 1.3 crores, making her the costliest player in the UPW squad.

2. Dani Wyatt (Batter) for 20 lakhs

3. Saima Thakor (Bowler) for 10 lakhs

4. Poonam Khemnar (All-Rounder) for 10 lakhs

The team also had to find a replacement for English bowler Lauren Bell as she withdrew from the tournament. In her place, UP recruited Sri Lankan batter Chamari Athapaththu.

UP Warriorz Team Performance in 2023

In the inaugural season of WPL, UP Warriorz played 8 matches and won 4 of them. It was one of three teams to have qualified for the knockout round.

However, the team lost to Mumbai in the eliminator round as it failed to chase the target of 182 runs. Mumbai qualified for the final thanks to Isabelle Wong’s spell of 4/15, which also resulted in the first-ever WPL hat-trick.

While Mumbai went on to defeat Delhi to win the WPL 2023 final, the UP Warriorz women’s team ended its run with 8 points, securing the third spot on the points table.

UP Women Team’s WPL 2024 Journey So Far

The UPW squad will definitely look to perform better than the previous year. However, they had a slow start to the season as they lost their first match against Bangalore. It was a nail-biter as the UPW women missed the target by just 2 runs.

They also lost their second match against Delhi in a low-scoring game. UP could only put up a target of 120, which Delhi chased down with 9 wickets in hand. However, the UPW fans sighed in relief when their team beat the Mumbai Indians by 7 wickets in the third match.

Currently, UP Warriorz women have 2 points to their name and are fourth on the points table. But now all eyes are set on their next match against Gujarat that will take place on 1st March.

Gujarat has yet to win a game and sits at the bottom of the table with zero points. It’s a perfect opportunity for UP to secure a win against a weak opponent. However, it’ll be an exciting contest as Gujarat is equally desperate for a win and may look to spoil UP’s chances.
