How to Check Your Car Loan Balance

How to Check Your Car Loan Balance

Summary: Your car loan balance tells you what is still unpaid. Your statement shows what has happened in the account, and a foreclosure quote tells you the amount needed to close the loan early. Here is how to find each one.

To learn how to check car loan balance details, open your lender’s website or mobile app and select the loan account. You can also contact customer care or get the information through a loan statement. Some lenders offer SMS or missed-call services, though the requests available through them are not the same everywhere.

Before you start, decide which figure you need. The outstanding balance is the amount still shown against the loan. The statement is a record of payments and other account entries. If you are planning to close the loan early, ask for a foreclosure amount instead. It is worked out separately and is valid for a limited period.

What is Your Car Loan Balance?

Your car loan balance is the amount still due on the loan, i.e., the unpaid principal plus interest and charges added up to that date. It falls with every EMI and drops further after a part-prepayment. It is not necessarily the amount required to close the loan.

A car loan balance check is useful when you want to see how far you have come with repayment or whether a prepayment fits your budget. The figure can change after an EMI, a fee or another entry is posted.

For early closure, do not pay only the balance displayed in the account. Ask the lender for a foreclosure quote that includes all applicable dues.

5 Ways to Check Your Car Loan Balance

Your car loan balance is the money that remains unpaid. It usually includes the principal still due, along with interest and charges added till that date. Each EMI brings it down, while a part-prepayment can reduce it further. It is different from the foreclosure amount.

A phone request or branch visit takes a little more time, especially if documents must be emailed or printed. For a quick car loan balance check, pick the route that gives you the information you need, i.e., the current balance, account history or foreclosure amount.

1. Net Banking/Lender Website

Use the lender’s website to see the balance recorded against your loan. Here is how to check car loan balance details online:

  1. Sign in with your registered mobile number, email address or user ID.
  2. Open Loans or Loan Accounts.
  3. Select your car loan.
  4. Check the outstanding balance, EMI, due date and tenure left.
  5. Download the Statement of Account to review earlier payments.

The figure shown normally includes payments already posted to your account. You can check it without paying a fee or visiting a branch.

2. Mobile App

For a quick check from your phone, open the lender’s mobile app. Your balance, next EMI details and loan documents are usually available under the loan account.

  1. Sign in to the app.
  2. Open your car loan account.
  3. Check the balance and next EMI date.
  4. Download the statement or repayment schedule if you need the full breakup.

This saves you from signing in through the website each time you want to check the account.

3. SMS or Missed Call

From the mobile number registered with your loan, send the keyword listed for the document you need. The available SMS requests include a Statement of Account and repayment schedule, which are sent to your registered email address.

There is no listed SMS keyword or missed-call option for receiving the current outstanding balance. To check that figure, log in to the customer portal or mobile app, or call customer care. Always take the keyword or number from the current service page, as these details can change.

4. Customer Care/Phone Banking

Call customer care when you cannot sign in or when an entry in the account needs an explanation. Use your registered number and keep the loan account number nearby. The executive will first confirm your identity, then help you check the outstanding amount or request the document you need.

Ask for the figure by name. Say “current outstanding” for the balance and “foreclosure quote” if you intend to close the loan. This avoids confusion between two amounts that need not match.

5. Loan Statement (Online or Branch)

A car loan statement gives you more than one balance figure. It records the sanctioned amount, EMIs received, dates of payment, charges and the outstanding amount after entries are posted. The repayment or amortisation schedule gives the planned principal-and-interest split for each EMI.

Download the Statement of Account from the lender’s portal or app. You can ask customer care to send it by email, use an available SMS request or collect a physical copy from a branch. Online statements are usually free, while a copy requested from a branch may carry a fee.

Balance vs Statement vs Foreclosure Amount: Know the Difference

ItemWhat you receiveWhen to use it
BalanceThe current amount outstanding in the accountTo see how much of the loan remains
Car loan statementA record of payments, charges and other entriesTo check account activity or trace a discrepancy
Foreclosure amountA dated quote for closing the loan early, including applicable duesBefore making an early-closure payment

The balance on your dashboard is not a payoff quote. To close the loan, request the foreclosure amount and check its validity. Read the applicable prepayment and foreclosure charges before paying.

For an eligible electric-vehicle loan sanctioned from 1 April 2019 to 31 March 2023, Section 80EEB provides a deduction of up to ₹1.5 lakh on interest paid, subject to the law’s conditions. Your statement and interest documents can help you keep the necessary records. If you need funds instead of closing the account, check whether a top-up loan is available and compare its cost separately.

Why Check Your Car Loan Balance Regularly?

A regular car loan balance check shows whether your payments are being recorded correctly. It is also useful when you want to:

  • Plan a part-prepayment or foreclosure based on the amount still due.
  • See how each EMI is divided between principal and interest.
  • Find an EMI that has not been credited or a charge you do not recognise.
  • Catch a missed payment before it affects your CIBIL score and credit report.
  • Keep an up-to-date view of your remaining debt.

If you are thinking about changing the tenure or paying a larger amount, enter the current figures in the car loan EMI calculator to see how the EMI and total interest may change.

Conclusion

The methods above explain how to check car loan balance details through the lender’s website, app, customer care, SMS service or loan statement. Customer care can help when you cannot access the account, while a car loan statement is better when you need to trace payments and charges. SMS services can be useful for requesting documents if your lender supports them.

Remember that the outstanding balance, statement and foreclosure quote are not interchangeable. Ask for the foreclosure amount before closing the loan early. For account help, use the customer-support channels or the Car Loan EMI Calculator to review your repayment options.

FAQs

How do I check my car loan balance?

Log in to your lender’s website or app, select the car loan and open the account details. The current outstanding should appear there. If you cannot sign in, call customer care from your registered number and keep the loan account number ready for verification.

How do I download my car loan statement?

Open your loan account on the lender’s portal or app and select the Statement of Account download option. You can also ask customer care for an emailed copy or visit a branch. Some lenders let you request the statement by SMS from your registered mobile number.

Is my outstanding balance the same as my foreclosure amount?

No. The outstanding balance is the amount shown against the running loan. A foreclosure amount is prepared for early closure and can include interest up to a stated date, foreclosure charges and other unpaid dues. Request a dated foreclosure quote before making the final payment.

Can I check my car loan balance by SMS?

It depends on the lender’s SMS menu. The SMS service list usually requests for a Statement of Account and repayment schedule, but not a direct outstanding-balance keyword. Use the portal, mobile app or customer care when you need the latest balance itself.

Is there a charge to get my car loan statement?

Yes, a fee can apply if you request a printed statement from a branch. Statements downloaded through the lender’s customer portal are usually free. Check the current schedule of charges before choosing how to get the statement.

Why does my statement show different principal and interest amounts?

The principal and interest figures in a car loan statement change because each EMI is split between the two. In the early months, more of the EMI usually goes towards interest. As the unpaid principal falls, the split changes. Your repayment schedule gives the exact breakup for each instalment.
