What Is Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) and Why Is It Important?

What Is Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES) and Why Is It Important?

One of the pressing issues in India is the ever-rising levels of air pollution. To keep the pollution level in check, the Government of India introduced the Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES).

Let us get to know what is Bharat Stage 4 and what is Bharat Stage 6.

What Is Bharat Stage 4?

The Bharat Stage 4 or BS4 norms were made compulsory in 2017. According to the Bharat Stage 4 emission norms, only 50 parts per million sulphur content was permitted in vehicles. Compared to BS4, the BS6 fuel is much cleaner in quality as it has five times lesser sulphur content than the BS4 fuel. The BS6 fuel’s Nitrogen Oxide levels are also reduced by 70% and 25% for diesel and petrol engines respectively.

What Is Bharat Stage 6?

The Bharat Stage 6 (BS6) norms are the sixth step in the vehicular emission series to fight the rising air pollution levels. With the stricter Bharat Stage 6 norms coming into effect, India will be equivalent to developed countries in terms of CO2 emissions.

Importance of Bharat Stage Emission Standards

Emission from vehicles is the primary contributor to the worsening air quality of Indian cities. Therefore, the Bharat Stage Emission Standards established by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) keep a check on the output of air pollutants exhausted from car engines.

The Bharat Stage Emission Standards based on the European emission norms were first introduced in 2000. Now, India is all set to make its most significant leap by implementing the Bharat Stage 6 or BS6 emission standards. This BS6 norms are touted to be the most significant technological leap that India’s automotive industry has taken towards cleaner air effect on Car Owners

With the announcement of BS6 norms, the Government has recently mandated that automobile manufacturers will sell only BS6 compliant vehicles after April 2020. Indian oil companies have already chalked out plans to distribute BS6-grade petrol and diesel in Delhi, as well as other metropolises.

Ideally, you should opt for a vehicle that is compliant with the BS6 norms but buying a new BS6 vehicle is not easy as it requires adequate funds. An excellent alternative to purchasing a new vehicle is to buy a second-hand car with a pre-owned car loan. A used car loan is an economical way to adhere to the BS6 norms brought into motion.
