Study in Canada: Student VISA and Immigration Guide for Canada

Congratulations on being accepted into a Canadian university. Thanks to attractive personal loan interest rates, you can easily finance your studies abroad,

But getting university acceptance and funding your studies aren’t enough for you to start your academic career in Canada. Your next step to flying overseas for higher education is getting a student visa.

Here is a brief guide on everything you should know and consider while applying for a student visa.

Eligibility for student visa

Here are a few prerequisites you must meet before applying for your visa to study in Canada.

  • If you are visiting Canada to study as an international student, you must be enrolled at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI). Make sure that your DLI is on the list of DLIs with an approved Covid-19 readiness plan.
  • You must also put forward proof that you have enough money to pay for your tuition, your stay, and your return.
  • You must have no criminal record and arrange for a police certificate.
  • You should be in the pink of your health and produce a medical certificate.

Documents required

Given below are the various documents required to apply for a student visa for Canada.

  • Proof of acceptance

Your DLI must send you a letter of acceptance once you have secured a seat there. Here, you can either use the original document or a digital application along with your study permit application.

  • Proof of identity

You must have your passport or some travel document. If you’re applying for a passport online, upload the information page. Or, if you have an approved passport, share the original document.

Also, you need 2 recent passport-size photos, with your name and date of birth written on the back.

  • Proof of financial support

You won’t be eligible for Canada’s student visa unless you have enough money to fund your education and stay in the country. This means you should have an amount between 10,000 and 11,000 CAD annually for living in the country, a Canadian bank account in your name with the transferred funds, your past 4 months bank statement, or proof of personal loan for education.

  • Letter of explanation

This letter helps the visa officer understand why you want to pursue your studies in Canada and what your responsibilities as a student for a Canadian DLI are. You may also be requested to submit a statement of purpose or SOP underlining why you should be eligible to study in a Canadian institute.

Arrange the paperwork in advance to apply for a student permit for Canada. Once you have met the prescribed eligibility criteria and gathered all the documents, you can apply for the visa online.
