Gaj is an age-old unit of measurement used in North India for land measurements in real estate dealings. It is equivalent to a square yard, i.e., 1 Gaj equals 9 square feet.
It was applied in ancient India to measure land, cloth, and buildings. Under the Mughal rule, Gaj emerged as a usual land-measuring and tax-gathering unit. Imperial units such as square yards were popular later under British rule, but Gaj is still accepted for property transactions and plot sizes.
Square feet (sq ft) is a standard measuring area used mainly in construction, real estate, and interior design. A square foot is equal to a square that measures one foot (12 inches) on each side.
The history of square feet goes back to ancient Rome when the Roman foot (pes) was used as a standard measure of length. The British established the modern imperial system, where square feet were standardized and now is an international unit of measurement. It is commonly used with other measurements such as Gaj, square meters, and acres in the case of Indian property transactions.
As 1 Gaj equals 9 square feet, knowing this conversion ensures precise measurement of land and property spaces.
