Acre is the standard unit for measurement of land. The unit is mostly used in the USA, UK, and India. The term originated in the Middle Ages in Britain, signifying the amount of land that could be ploughed by an oxen’s yoke in a single day.
One acre is approximately equal to 43,560 square feet or 4,840 square yards. It can also be thought of as 16 tennis courts combined. It is mainly used to measure agricultural lands and construction plots.
Bigha is a traditional unit used to calculate land area. The unit is widely used in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It originated from the Sanskrit term ‘vigraha,’ which translates to division. In earlier times, one bigha referred to the size of land that required two ploughs for cultivation.
Bigha has no standard value attached to it. Due to cultural practices and historical factors, the unit has different measurements in different regions of India.
