November 2020
Electricity demand in India grew over the last decade from FY 2011 to FY 2019.
However, this fell in FY 2020. India was already facing an economic slowdown, with industrial output declining to an 8-year low during the year. And given this sector is the largest consumer of electricity in India, the sectoral slowdown resultantly impacted the growth in power demand across the country in FY 2020.
The power demand fell sharply after the nationwide lock-down was imposed with the onset of
COVID-19 induced pandemic. The month of April registered a reduction in demand on a year-on-year basis. But with the lockdown restrictions easing from the latter part of 2020, power consumption has started to pick up.Â
