Section 80CCD(1)

Under the old tax regime, eligible individual contributions to Tier I NPS can qualify for a deduction under Section 80CCD(1), subject to rules. For salaried individuals, the deduction is generally subject to 10% of salary and for eligible self-employed individuals it can be up to 20% of gross total income(within the applicable overall limit of ₹1.5 lakh under Section 80CCE).

2. Section 80CCD(1B)

An additional deduction of up to ₹50,000 is available under Section 80CCD(1B) for eligible NPS contributions which is over and above the limit available under Section 80CCD(1). This deduction is available under the old tax regime.

3. Section 80CCD(2)

Section 80CCD(2) covers eligible employer contributions to an employee’s NPS account. The deduction limit is 14% of salary where the employer is the Central or State Government, while a 10% limit applies to PSU or other employers under the applicable provisions.

Unlike Sections 80CCD(1) and 80CCD(1B), eligible employer contributions under Section 80CCD(2) can also be claimed under the new tax regime, subject to the applicable conditions.

Section

What it covers

Tax treatment

80CCD(1)

Eligible individual NPS contribution

Old tax regime, subject to applicable limits

80CCD(1B)

Additional NPS contribution

Additional deduction of up to ₹50,000 under old tax regime

80CCD(2)

Employer’s NPS contribution

Available subject to applicable limits and conditions, including under the new tax regime

Tax rules can change, so taxpayers should verify the provisions applicable to the relevant assessment year.

NPS Contribution via Employer vs eNPS: What’s the Difference?

Employer contributions and eNPS contributions are separate ways of funding an NPS account.

For employees covered under corporate or government-sector NPS, the employer’s contribution is generally made through the employer’s payroll or contribution process and credited to the employee’s PRAN.

The eNPS enables the subscriber to make additional contributions on his own through the online platform. Thus, an employee can have employer contribution to the NPS account as well as a voluntary NPS contribution online through eNPS, as per the applicable rules.

This distinction is important because an online contribution made by the subscriber does not replace an employer’s mandatory contribution where such an employer contribution is applicable.

Also Read – Thumb rule of investment

Common Issues with NPS Online Payment

Subscribers may face the following issues while making an NPS payment online:

Payment Successful but PRAN Not Credited: NPS transactions go through a settlement process before the contribution is credited. Keep the payment receipt and allow the applicable processing time before raising a grievance.

Wrong Tier Chosen: Double check the Tier I or Tier II account selected before submitting the transaction. The existing eNPS platform has an error rectification process through CRA within prescribed timelines and documents in case of any wrong Tier or contribution data entered.

Payment Timeout: Please check your bank statement and transaction status before attempting to make the payment again to avoid duplicate payments.

PRAN Not Found: Please re-check the PRAN and date of birth entered on the portal before re-attempting the transaction.

In case of certain contribution errors like incorrect amount, Tier type or Virtual ID, the current eNPS platform of Protean requires the subscribers to file a grievance with CRA and file the necessary documents within the prescribed timeline.

Conclusion

Making an NPS payment online through eNPS is a paperless process that allows subscribers to contribute to their Tier I or Tier II accounts without visiting a physical PoP. Subscribers can make contributions in addition to meeting the applicable Tier I annual contribution requirement.

The process involves entering the PRAN and required details, selecting the relevant account, entering the contribution amount and completing the transaction through an available payment method.

Tier I currently requires a minimum contribution of ₹500 per transaction and ₹1,000 per year, while Tier II requires a minimum contribution of ₹250 per transaction.

Eligible NPS contributions may qualify for tax benefits under Sections 80CCD(1), 80CCD(1B) and 80CCD(2), depending on the contribution type and applicable tax regime. The availability and limits of these deductions should be checked for the relevant assessment year.
