Check Out How Thailand Celebrates The Songkran Festival 2022

Thailand is a land of multiple cultures, unique landscapes, extraordinary beaches and that holds love for celebration. One such widely celebrated festival is Songkran or the water festival Thailandwhich marks the beginning of the Buddhist new year. The festival begins on the 13th of April and ends on the 15th every year, similar to the Indian festival of Baisakhi which also marks the beginning of the solar new year.

Here is everything you need to know about Thailand’s Songkran festival:

1. Water fights are a common sight

Thais celebrate the Songkran with water fights. You can spot people from all walks of life carrying their fancy water tanks on their shoulders and spraying water on each other to celebrate the Thai New Year.

Songkran is also the biggest event of water fight across the globe. Water is a significant part of the festival as it is rooted back to the times when people celebrated Songkran by pouring water over Lord Buddha’s feet as a gesture of respect.

2. The traditional celebrations go side by side

Songkran is not only about water fights but also enjoys the traditional aspect of a typical Buddhist festival. Marking the beginning of the Buddhist new year, many people prefer celebrating it traditionally as well. The morning begins by visiting Buddhist monasteries and temples and offering water and clothes to the monks. People pour water on the hands of monks to seek blessings for the new year. The 13th of April also happens to be Family Day in Thailand and hence some people celebrate the day by pouring water on the hands of their elders to seek blessings.

3. Building Sand Pagodas

Pagoda is a kind of tower that Thais make from the sand during the Songkran festival. These pagodas are a gesture of giving back to the temples whatever they take along on each visit in the form of sand in their feet. This sand is later on used for the renovation and construction purposes of the temple.

4. Jiving to the beats of party music

During the festival, the streets turn into dance floors. Along with water fights, you can witness people dancing and jiving to the beats of local and international music. Several renowned singers and DJs are invited to set the stage on fire with their happening music.

How Thailand is celebrating Songkran 2022, and what it means for you

If you didn’t know, Thailand is bringing back Songkran to the tourists in 2022 after three years, given the Covid-19 restrictions. However, the country is being very cautious about it. For instance, the country has banned splashing water in all public areas and restricted drinking parties and nightlife venues for the time being. But traditional Songkran celebrations are still being allowed. Additionally, Thailand is opening its borders to tourists and considering scrapping the fully-vaccinated mandate and loosening the testing requirements.  International travellers are currently required to take a PCR test 72 hours before travel and show a negative report first, then take another PCR test upon arrival and an antigen test on the 5th day. However, now, the nation is planning on scrapping the pre-arrival test. So, travelling to Thailand for Songkran just got easier.
