Having carved its own space and created loyalists in the smartphone market, OnePlus is setting some strong examples. The Chinese smartphone maker introduced the much-awaited OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro last week. But given the global pandemic situation, a launch event is not possible; though that couldn’t keep the company from letting its patrons experience the most sophisticated and powerful phones from the OnePlus stack.

Leveraging augmented reality (AR), OnePlus is allowing users to unbox OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro virtually. Here is how you can participate while staying at home.

Unbox virtually

Going a little creative with the unveiling of its phone in such bizarre times, the Chinese tech company has launched AR Instagram filters that support virtual unboxing of the latest devices. The filters virtually place the phone in your setting, allowing you to unveil the unit including the smartphone, cover, charging brick, and Type-C cable.

Consumers can access the AR box anywhere by following these easy steps:

  • Open the Instagram app and click on the camera icon
  • Scroll the filters and stop at ‘Browse Effects’
  • Type OnePlus in the search bar and you will get options for unboxing OnePlus 8 or OnePlus 8 Pro
  • Select the device and choose a flat surface to place the box virtually in your environment
  • Tap on the box to see get a 360-degree view of the contents inside

Oneplus 8 Instagram AR

For Indian users, OnePlus has introduced a challenge where one has to post an unboxing video and tag @oneplus_india and use #OnePlusARUnboxing. The most creative videos will win the OnePlus 8 series smartphones.

Recalling OnePlus 8 series features

OnePlus 8 has a 6.55-inch full HD and Fluid AMOLED display, while Pro has 6.78-inch QHD and Fluid AMOLED display. Both are powered by the latest Snapdragon 865 SoC and offer 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. On the camera front, OnePlus 8 offers a triple camera including a 48MP primary lens, a 16MP ultra-wide lens and a 2MP macro lens. And OnePlus 8 Pro sports a quad-rear camera with a 48MP primary lens, a 48MP ultra-wide sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens with 3X hybrid zoom and a 5MP colour filter lens. The phones also offer 16MP front shooter. Both models are 5G certified, run on Android 10 with a battery power of 4,300mAh and 4,510 mAh respectively.

With the newest additions to its premium line-up only available in Europe and the US as of now, the Indian version may hit the shelves in June 2020. The phones have already been listed on Amazon India with a notify icon. The Indian pricing is also anticipated to be more aggressive than the global rates – OnePlus 8 at $699 (INR 53,435) and Pro at $899 (INR 68,724).
